Human mind and body are inextricably linked. The branch of science that studies the influence of psychological factors on the occurrence of bodily diseases is called psychosomatics. When we suppress our emotions for a long time, they find an "outlet" in the form of physical symptoms.

How are psychosomatic diseases born?

Psychosomatic diseases often occur as a result of stress and suppressed emotions (sadness, fear, anger). In this case, the person has real, physiological pains or symptoms, but medical tests do not identify any organic cause.

Psychologists distinguish a number of connections between emotions and diseases.

  • Asthma and respiratory problems. Often associated with stifled sobs, repressed love, and fear of life. In children, it can manifest as addiction and fear of living independently.
  • Allergies. May express a denial of one's power or opposition to something that is impossible to voice.
  • Arthritis and joint pains. It often occurs in people who feel that they are not loved, cannot say "no" and are constantly critical and strict with themselves.
  • Self-punishment. In some cases, physical illness plays the role of unconscious self-punishment, alleviating feelings of imagined guilt.

Treatment and psychological support

In the case of psychosomatic disorders, only drug treatment (such as painkillers) gives a temporary effect. True healing requires combining treatment with psychotherapy.
