How Minder checks professionals and guides

Informed consent for online therapy is more than a checkbox before the first video call. A client needs to understand what service you offer, what may go wrong, what you will do together if it does, and how to raise concerns. In Armenia, the exact legal and professional requirements depend on your qualification, setting and the client’s location; this article is a discussion aid, not a legal template.

Start with the service itself

State your professional role and scope, the likely session format and duration, your approach to assessment, and the situations where remote care may be unsuitable. Avoid promising that online therapy is always equivalent to in-person work. Ask how the client understands confidentiality and invite questions in the language they prefer.

Cover the practical risks explicitly

  • Privacy: Discuss who might overhear at either location, whether sessions may be recorded and how records and messages are handled.
  • Connection failure: Agree on a backup contact method and when to reconnect or reschedule.
  • Urgent situations: Agree what to do if immediate support is needed, including the client’s current location and relevant local emergency services.
  • Fees and changes: Explain payment timing, cancellations, missed sessions and what happens when technology fails.
  • Between-session contact: Define what messages are for, expected response times and what is not monitored continuously.

These themes appear in the APA telepsychology consent checklist and its broader practice guidelines. They are international professional references, not statements of Armenian law.

Check understanding, not just a signature

Ask the client to summarize how they would reach you if the connection drops and what they would do in an emergency. Provide the agreed terms in writing, allow time to read them and revisit them if format, location, fees or clinical circumstances change. The BACP contracting guide also stresses terms that clients can understand.

Build consent into the booking journey

Make your public profile clear about language, session format, fee and contact route so a client arrives with fewer surprises. Use our short intake guide for first-contact questions and the messaging boundaries guide for ongoing contact. Explore Minder’s professional workflow when reviewing how your own process should fit the platform.

For two-participant work, see the separate online couples therapy practitioner checklist.
